Sleep Disturbances Could be a Sign of Chronic Pain

Vet Record CoverA recent study found that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels showing signs of chronic neuropathic pain were also more likely to experience disturbed sleep and a reduced quality of life.

Researchers surveyed owners about their dogs’ sleep patterns, pain-related behaviours, and overall wellbeing. The results showed a clear link between increased nighttime restlessness, higher pain scores, and poorer quality of life.

While further research is needed, the findings suggest that sleep disturbances may be an important and often overlooked sign of chronic pain in Cavaliers, particularly those affected by Chiari-like Malformation (CM) and Syringomyelia (SM). Early recognition of these signs may help improve both diagnosis and treatment.
