A Petition Against Battery Farmed Puppies

Battery Puppy Farming is a cruel business with thousands of dogs being bred for excessive financial gain at the expense of their welfare. The RSPCA estimates that 50,000 battery farmed puppies are trafficked into the UK from Ireland alone.

Vast numbers of puppies are produced in similar conditions to "battery farming". The bitches are isolated and crammed into small cages and crates without bedding, in buildings without light or ventilation. The dogs are given the minimum of food and water needed to keep them alive and breeding.

The bitches are bred from a very early age and every season until they are worn out. When they are of no more use they are killed.

A significant proportion of the estimated eight million dogs in the UK started their lives on a puppy farm. People have unwittingly bought puppies that have been removed from their mothers before they are properly weaned and transported in cruel conditions to be sold in pet shops, on the internet, in newspaper adverts or via backyard breeders.

The Survival of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed

People who own Cavaliers as pets are the largest body with an interest in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

In 1997 the Kennel Club was notified by a leading neurologist of the existence of Syringomyelia and have known about the inherent heart disease for over 30 years. 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' highlighted the lack of concern and control the Kennel Club has over breeding standards. Our specific concern is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. Our aim is to make Kennel Club recognition meaningful and for the Kennel Club to accept its responsibility for the future of our breed, to have the authority to deal with breeding standards and to be accountable when standards fail.

Health protocols and breeding guidelines covering serious hereditary diseases have recently been agreed with the UK Cavalier Clubs.

A large number of irresponsible breeders are continuing to breed outside these codes of practice, breeding more puppies into a life of pain and potentially condemning this unique breed to possible extinction.

As CKCS pet folk we want to show our strength in numbers and demand that all breeders comply with the agreed protocols and campaign until they stop this heartless cruelty.
